Welcome to the Neighborhood – A note from Caught in Southie’s Founder and Editor

Hi Neighbor,

First—welcome to South Boston! I’m Maureen Dahill, founder and editor of Caught in Southie, a website dedicated to the neighborhood of South Boston!  Think of me as Southie’s biggest cheerleader! I love what I do, and more importantly, I love South Boston. So much so that I have built my career around its very foundation. Caught in Southie is more than just a platform; it’s a daily love letter to our neighborhood—celebrating its history, its people, its quirks, and every vibrant Southie thing in between.

A little about me: I’m a 4th-generation South Boston native, married to a fellow lifelong resident, Peter, a Boston Firefighter right here in our neighborhood. We’ve raised three children in City Point, and you can often find me walking around the neighborhood – on my way to a yoga sculpt class, or meeting up with girlfriends at Martini Monday (see you there?).  I’m a collector of vintage clothing and accessories (I once owned a vintage shop at G and Broadway named Maude Mango, which won the Best of Boston award, anyone ever been??) In my previous life, I worked as a wardrobe and prop stylist on commercials and photo shoots.

And, what began as a tiny, intimate blog —sharing Southie nostalgia, hyperlocal traditions like saving a spot after a snowstorm and double-parking, quickly morphed into what you see and love here today: a respected, reliable news source that keeps the community connected, informed, and endlessly entertained (those sightings of Oliver the cat can’t come often enough:).

If you’ve just moved in, WELCOME…you’re probably already noticing what makes Southie special: its gritty roots mixed with a new energy, beautiful parks and beaches, and the best people around.

Caught in Southie is the place to feel connected, delighted, and informed, whether that’s through the latest sighting of the teenage whale in the harbor, the best spot to catch the game, or the new pizzeria down the street that’s definitely worth a reservation. South Boston has it all…and because of YOU and all the things that make our community amazing, so does Caught In Southie!

Make sure to check out our New to the Neighborhood Guide, too. Whether you just moved into the neighborhood or are looking for something new in the neighborhood, this is the guide for you! We’ve included helpful tips, new businesses on the horizon, and new things to try! It’s all right here! Check back as this guide will be updated!

Here are a few highlights:

One last piece of advice: Introduce yourself to your neighbors! Just saying Hello goes a long way—it’s how strangers become neighbors and neighbors become friends. Plus, you never know when you’ll need someone to grab a package, remind you to move your car during street cleaning, or lend you a cup of sugar! As my nana used to say, “It’s nice to be nice.”

You can follow us on Instagram, too. From reuniting lost pets to covering the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, from highlighting new businesses to sharing historic moments, Caught in Southie is a platform for everyone. Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or just moved in last week, you’re part of this community. And I am SO honored to be a voice within it.

See you around the neighborhood,

Maureen Dahill

Can I add a little something? If you are a pet owner, please respect the neighborhood as the rest of us who own dogs do. Scoop your dog’s poop and leash your dog where required (Medal of Honor Park and Dorchester Heights especially!!). We have two awesome dog parks, South Boston Bark Park on Columbia Road right across from the ocean and the East First Street Dog Park where they have water, agility ramps and benches. Both locations allow dogs to romp off leash.

Just a friendly reminder, after you have scooped, please take it home to YOUR OWN trash barrel. Do not leave it on people’s doorsteps, throw it into the street, nor put it in other’s trash (or especially not green compost bins). We old folks don’t want to have to wash out our barrels every week, nor deal with the flies and smell. That small courtesy would go a long way toward your joining the neighborhood on a good foot.
