Halloween Fun – 2020-style

The Halloween season looks different this year but it doesn’t mean you can’t do something fun!  Here are some local events to participate in!

Virtual Pumpkin Float

The Neponset River Greenway Greenway Council want you to show your Halloween spirit with your Jack-o-lantern over zoom! This event is targeted for children, but adults can show off their pumpkins too! Enjoy a fun night of songs, games, and trivia! Costumes are encouraged, pre-registration required.October 29th at 6pm.  You can learn more here! 

Mayor Walsh’s Pumpkin Carving Contest

Share photos of your jack-o’-lanterns with the Boston Parks Department and they will share our favorites on social media. Enter the contest for your chance to win a prize!  Get the details here! 

Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt

Probably no surprise to anyone, but Trick or Treating on Broadway has been canceled due to COVID-19. But don’t worry, the South Boston Chamber of Commerce announces the first ever Jack O’Lantern’s Halloween Scavenger Hunt!  Learn how to play and win prizes here! 

South Boston Happy Haunting Halloween Car Parade

This fun – and socially distance event – will take place on Saturday, October 31st at 10:30am and will travel through the streets of South Boston.  Dress up your cars and yourselves and roll in on the fun! Vehicle lineup will be at the Boston Athletic Club parking lot beginning at 9:50am.  You can registered your car here via Evite!  Awards will be given for best decorated cars!  The map of the parade will be made available the day of the event.

Rules of the Road:

• Participants agree to remain in their vehicles while in the Boston Athletic Club Parking Lot and for the duration of the parade
• Please come with masks in the event we need to communicate with you while in your vehicle
• Abide by all COVID protocols. Please be safe and consider the health and wellbeing of those around
• Please no consumption of any prohibited substances
• Please do not throw anything out of your vehicle
• Pedestrian and traffic safety is of imminent importance. All participants agree to abide by all traffic laws. Note: pedestrians always have the right of way. If you see someone in the crosswalk or attempting to cross the street, kindly stop and let them cross.
• The South Boston Police Department will be assisting vehicles through the parade route. We are grateful for their involvement to ensure a safe and successful parade.

Quarantine-O-Ween

D’s Keys is hosting a virtual Quantantine-O-Ween on Halloween from 8pm-11pm featuring all their piano players! They’ll have a streaming, all request, three hour live show AND a virtual costume contest with some great prizes!  Follow them on Instagram for details!

Dia de Muertos

Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Alberto Fierro, Consul General of Mexico in Boston, announced a citywide photo collection process of departed loved ones in preparation for Boston’s third annual Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. This year’s altar will take place in the south end of Franklin Park, in Scarboro Pond and over the pond’s bridge (closest to the golf course). The altar will be on display from Saturday, October 31 at 1 p.m. through Sunday, November 1 at 4 p.m.  This year, Dia de Muertos falls on the rare occurrence of a ‘blue moon’ (second full moon in the same month).  Families and friends are invited for a walk outdoors, or a ‘Paseo de la Luna Azul’, to take in the views of the elements of Dia de Muertos and the tradition’s relation to the natural world. Members of the public are invited to submit photos and memories of departed loved ones through boston.gov/diademuertos. Submissions received by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 30 will be displayed as part of the virtual citywide altar.
