A Brief History of Sail Boston: How the Tall Ships Became a Boston Tradition

When the Tall Ships sail into Boston Harbor this July, they’ll be continuing a tradition that dates back 50 years.

The first Sail Boston took place in 1976 as part of America’s Bicentennial celebration. Boston was chosen as one of the host cities for Operation Sail, an international gathering of Tall Ships from around the world. Millions of visitors lined the harbor to catch a glimpse of the majestic vessels, and the event quickly became one of the most memorable celebrations in the city’s history.

The success of that first event led to additional Sail Boston celebrations in 1992, 2000, 2009, and 2017, each bringing ships, crews, and visitors from dozens of countries to Boston’s waterfront.

Now, Sail Boston returns from July 11th through July 16th, 2026, and this year’s event is especially significant. Not only does it mark the 50th anniversary of the original Sail Boston, but it also coincides with America’s 250th birthday celebration.

Over the years, Sail Boston has become much more than a ship festival. It’s a celebration of maritime history, international friendship, and Boston’s enduring connection to the sea.

For Boston residents, it’s also a chance to enjoy one of the best waterfront spectacles around. With front-row views from the waterfront, there will be plenty of opportunities to watch history sail right through Boston Harbor.
