Taking the Plunge: Condon School Hosts First-Ever Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics

Students and staff at the Condon K-8 School in South Boston recently made a splash—literally—by hosting something pretty cool (and freezing): the Special Olympics Polar Plunge right in the school parking lot.

According to Special Olympics Massachusetts, the Condon became the first Boston Public School to bring the Polar Plunge experience on-site, thanks to a mobile plunge unit that turned their campus into an icy fundraising event.

But this wasn’t just about jumping into cold water. The event brought the entire school community together—from students and teachers taking the plunge to classmates cheering them on from the sidelines.

The goal? Supporting Special Olympics programming while also highlighting inclusion in a real, meaningful way. With many students at the school participating in Unified programs—and a strong focus on supporting students with intellectual disabilities and autism—the event hit close to home.

Teachers shared that bringing the Polar Plunge directly to the school helped remove barriers and made the experience more accessible for everyone. And the result? Lots of laughs, a little bravery, and a lots of school spirit.
