Mayor Marty Walsh nominated for Labor Secretary.
Politico is reporting that President Elect Joe Biden has chosen Mayor Marty Walsh as Labor Secretary. Holy Moly! This is big news! This certainly shakes up the local race for mayor!
What exactly does that mean?
Well, if Marty Walsh gets confirmed as the Labor Secretary and he accepts the job in Washington D.C. that means the Kim Janey – the City Councilor President will be acting Mayor of Boston. She would be the first Black Bostonian and woman to serve in this role!
Also timing is everything, according to the Boston Globe, if Walsh leaves for DC before March 5, 2021, there would be a special election. If he leaves after March, it would business as usual with a primary in September.
Both City Councilor Michelle Wu and City Councilor Andrea Campbell previously announced back in September they would be running for mayor. It is expected that many more will throw their hat in the ring for the race for mayor of Boston.
