At Wednesday’s City Council Meeting (in addition to the redistricting battle), the top of rats and trash came up.

Councilors Kenzie Bok, Ruthzee Louijeune, and Ed Flynn called for a hearing to discuss the possibility of starting some form of “a trash containerization pilot” program to help with the rat problem. (According to data compiled by Apartment Guide, Boston is the second most rat-infested metro area in the country.)

When residents use only trash bags and don’t properly store trash in bins, well, the rats have a field day. So a reminder to use trash cans and DO NOT put your trash in a bag on the sidewalk. Make sure your trash can lids are closed properly. Here are some friendly reminders about trash day here!

As if rats and trash weren’t enough to gross you out, Southie resident and City Councilor-at-Large Michael Flaherty added this disgusting fact to the conversation – rats love to eat dog feces. Good lord.  So please, put your poop bags into trash cans and don’t leave them on the street or piled up next to trees at the park. Here are some tips to help you be a better dog owner.

The hearing was ordered and assigned to the Committee on City Services, Innovation, and Technology.

The rat problem is increasing because houses are being allowed to leave their trash cans out in front of their buildings all the time. Before the rats trash bins were only allowed in front of houses after 5:00 PM the night before pickup. It’s also an eyesore seeing streets lined with trash cans constantly. Exactly with million dollar condo owners want to see their street lined with row after row of trash and recycling bins And with all of the hungry critters looking for contents.
