A Little Piece of Southie History Discovered at St. Augustine’s Convent

As South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation gets ready to transform the former St. Augustine’s Convent into affordable senior housing, workers made a pretty incredible discovery — a nearly 100-year-old time capsule hidden behind the chapel altar.
The box was found on February 28, 2026, by ICON Architecture’s Joe Daigneault while he was carefully taking apart the altar to preserve it. It was later opened on April 9th with members of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, South Boston NDC, and ICON on hand.
Inside were handwritten notes, prayer cards, photos, lists of names, and intentions for loved ones — a true snapshot of faith, family, and community life in South Boston back in 1927. Holy Moly!
The items will be photographed and displayed at McDevitt Senior Homes, while the originals will be sent to the Sisters of Notre Dame archivist in Ipswich for safekeeping. Pretty amazing, right?
