Your Guide to Packing the Perfect Picnic
With all signs pointing to spring (this week’s late-to-the-game snowstorm notwithstanding), it’s time to start prepping for picnic season. From the food to the gear, we’re doling out a few helpful tips to make sure your open-air feast is, well, a picnic!
The Spots: Castle Island, Thomas Park, The Harbor Walk
The Gear: Let’s start with the essentials: a wicker basket or linen tote and a large, durable blanket. Next up: linen napkins and acrylic tumblers (paper will fly away with even the slightest of breezes); seal-able containers to avoid messy spills; extra, biodegradable utensils (someone will drop a fork); and blanket-top games like Scrabble or checkers.
The Food: First and foremost, never make it too laborious. Start with portable munchies like sugar snap peas, edamame, or tortilla chips with guacamole. For the main course, serve up Mason jar salads or classic cold cut sandwiches, but be sure to make the sandwiches on site—no one likes soggy bread. When it comes to dessert, save space in your basket and head over to Sullivan’s, Yoberry, or Molly Moo’s.
The Drinks: Look to a little upgraded H20—simply fill a thermos with water, lemons, and mint for a refreshingly easy beverage. For something a little more adult-friendly, opt for a pre-batched summer cocktail, like spiked lemonade. To keep all drinks chilled, add a few frozen water bottles at the top of your basket. Then, when they defrost, you’ll have extra water on hand.
