Southie’s Own LA Firefighters Get a Hero’s Welcome Home

South Boston always shows up for its own—and that’s exactly what happened when two LA firefighters, originally from Southie, returned home for a visit this weekend.
First, the Marty and Matthew Mullen were welcomed back in true neighborhood fashion with a special celebration at South Boston Catholic Academy, where students gave them a warm and enthusiastic reception in addition to a check for a donation they raised for the LAFD. The students had a Tag Day, organized by the student council, and were able to raise $5,000.
“The students felt like this was one of their highest priorities to do a tag day, do a fundraiser and they put their minds to it, they did all of this,” school principal Helen Ann Sivian told WHDH, Channel 7. “They made the signs, they collected the money, it was absolutely amazing. It was all from the kids!”
On Saturday night, the Mullens attended a special night of friendship and fundraising to benefit the LAFD’s Widows, Orphans and Disabled Firefighters Fund and victims of the LA Wildfires at the Boston Teachers’ Union in Dorchester, where hundreds of people were in attendance.
These special event once again proving, that South Boston takes care of it’s own.
