Keep firefighters in California in your thoughts, including two from South Boston Martin + Matthew Mullen, proud members of LAFD – here’s how you can help.
As firefighters continue to battle multiple wildfires in Los Angeles County, keep them in your thoughts and prayers. According to the LA Times, the county remains under red flag warnings through Friday night. At least 10 people are dead, and nearly 10,000 structures have been destroyed, with an estimated $20 billion in insured losses.
The level of devastation is upsetting, with dozens of blocks of scenic Pacific Palisades flattened to smoldering rubble. In neighboring Malibu, blackened palm strands were all that was left above debris where oceanfront homes once stood. According to the Associated Press, metropolitan LA and its 13 million residents woke up Friday to yet another day of fire-stoking winds and the threat of new flareups.
More than 7,500 firefighting and emergency personnel have been deployed to protect California communities – two of those Los Angeles firefighters are Martin and Matthew Mullen, twin brothers from South Boston.
Firefighters made gains Thursday at slowing the spread of the major fires, but containment remained far out of reach. Please keep all the people of Los Angeles in your prayers.
Here locally in South Boston, Petula’s is offering the Southie Twins (after the Mullen’s) cocktail made with Spicy Tequila, Lime Passion Fruit, Cassis and Ginger Beer. $3 from each cocktail sold from Friday – Sunday will go to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Here’s a list of organizations that are helping those affected by the wildfires via the Boston Globe.
The Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, which equips LAFD members battling wildfires with equipment and supplies.
The California Fire Foundation, which provides support financial support to firefighters, families of deceased firefighters, and victims of wildfires.
Defy Disaster, a program established by the Entertainment Industry Foundation that supports immediate and long-term relief.
The California Community Foundation, which supports and collaborates with a range of organizations, including those that provide emergency aid to wildfire survivors and first responders.
