It appears that Boston Harbor is a bounty of fish – in particular striped bass!  Last week, we reported on a 34-inch striper caught right off the rocks near the locks at Castle Island. Well, this week, these beauties were caught off of Castle Island!

Sent to us by the Instagram fishing account @westendbend, the bass ranged in size from 30-36 inches and were caught over near the shipping containers at Conley Terminal.

Here’s the post:

Better to Be Lucky Than Good

It’s inevitable for adversity to hit when you’re out on the water. Between evolving weather conditions, faulty gear, and leaks in the fuel line, the crew was confronted by a gauntlet of uncertainty and managed to prevail.

Favorable conditions and a plethora of pogies made for productive trips of getting bent and dodging cruise ships. Multiple bass 30-36” illiciting mayhem.

As quickly as the action ramped up it devolved just as quickly, with the boat needing a tow due to a pinhole in our fuel. Baffled and hopeless with the future of our season in jeopardy, we leaned on trusted, proven professionals to save our ass.

One phone call to @chrisravosa at @ravosamarine and our nerves were put at ease. Literally waiting at the dock for our boat to get towed to his service slip, Chris had us back on the water and on the fish in 20 minutes, unfathomably great customer service.

While we were lucky enough to hook into some big bass there’s always a million and one ways to improve. Just when you think you’ve got the fishery figured out, it finds new ways to humble you which makes it an endeavor worth pursuing.

Awesome fish being “Caught in Southie”, right outside our door. CIS, please let the readers know that the recreational angler regulations for “keeper” sized striped bass changed yesterday. The new measurement for keepers is that you can possess one fish, 28” up to 31”. The previous top limit was up to 35”. The Massachusetts Environmental Police enforce these rules pretty well, so keep that in mind. The state says the reason for the change was that last year’s total catch of striped bass was double the amount caught in 2021.
