MBTA fares on the rise!
Good grief.
With over crowded buses and trains, lousy service, and a system that’s pretty much broken, the MBTA has boldly announced it wants more money for fares. Beginning July 1st, a single ride will be $2.40 (up from $2.15). A monthly LinkPass will cost you $90 (up from $84.50), and commuter rail fares are rising $.15-.75 cents per one way ride. Luckily for bus riders, prices will not change. Same for senior and student pass rates. The $10 weekend commuter rail pilot program was made permanent.
The decision to raise the pricing was voted on this week by Fiscal and Management Control Board.
The last time there was a fare increase it was 2016. According to the MBTA fare proposal FAQ, the proposed increase “is necessary for the Authority to continue making system investments to improve service.” You know, like all the service and system improvements we’ve seen since 2016. Not to mention Boston has the worst rush-hour traffic in the country. Maybe now is not the time to deter people from taking the T. We can do better!
