Like Bourbon Street but in Boston

GBH is reporting that Boston may soon propose designating several areas in the city as zones for open alcohol consumption, similar to  Vegas or New Orleans’ French Quarter.

Basically, these areas, known as “social districts,” are designated zones where people can purchase alcoholic drinks from restaurants and bars and consume them outdoors.

This is something that Corean Reynolds, the City of Boston’s director of nightlife economy, is considering presenting to the community. The neighborhoods being considered would include Allston-Brighton, Fenway-Kenmore, Downtown Boston, the North End, and the Seaport.

According to Boston municipal code and state law, outdoor alcohol consumption is illegal, but lawmakers could be convinced to relax alcohol-related rules, especially if it helps local businesses.

A city spokesperson told GBH, they are in the “early stages of researching and exploring” the potential impact of social districts “and have not determined if we will advance this concept further at this stage.”

When did the City of Boston hire a ‘Director of Nightlife Economy’ and how much are the taxpayers on the hook for with this person’s salary and their staff? Maybe we are getting to the point where we do need some oversight, but not if it’s going to result in stupid ideas like this. Really?? In the North End?? Next stop, Southie. I notice there’s no mention of Beacon Hill or the Back Bay.
