City Council Votes To Change Rule so it can remove its President

Well, this is interesting, the Boston Herald is reporting that the Boston City Council voted 10-1 on Wednesday to approve a change in its own rules that would enable the body to remove its president by a two-thirds vote.

What exactly does this mean? Well, it means it can remove Kim Janey from her current position.

City Councilor Lydia Edwards proposed the rule change stating it is about the power “to choose when we no longer want those leaders to lead us.”

Hmmm….so since Kim Janey was the City Council President earlier this year which allowed her to become acting mayor when Marty Walsh left to become the US Labor Secretary, if two-thirds of the council votes to remove her from her presidency then she wouldn’t be acting mayor anymore.

City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo was the only vote against the change to the rule. City Councilor Julia Mejia voted “present” and everyone else voted for the change including Andrea Campbell, Annissa Essaibi George and Michelle Wu – who are all running for mayor.  Janey is also running for mayor but did not vote because ever since she became acting mayor she has been an inactive member of the council.
