From Press Release:
Boston City Council President Bill Linehan announces details on the next four hearings to be held by the Special Committee on the 2024 Bill Linehan, Boston City Council President and Chair of the Committee on the 2024 Olympics, announces the third in a series of hearings developed to examine the potential value of Boston hosting the 2024 International Olympic Games. The hearing, set for Friday June 26th at 9:30 a.m. in the Iannella Chamber at City Hall, will focus on the financing of operations and venue development. All are welcome to attend.

Many questions and concerns regarding the Olympics have been posed, but two areas of concern have been at the forefront of the dialogue concerning the Olympic bid — private financing and venue development. This hearing is crucial to help formulate a position on the benefits and costs of the Games.

The committee will look to further investigate the financing of operations for the games and how the games are being funded to ensure the residents of the City of Boston are protected.  “I invite all who have an interest to join the Council as we continue to systematically peel back the onion on this very important effort, step by step, hearing by hearing,” Council President Linehan said.

In addition to the funding and the economic impact of the Games, venue development will have the most direct impact on the neighborhoods in Boston. The hearing will examine the most recent plans to date, discuss the validity of the locations, and the community process that will be undertaken as part of this effort. The venue development process leading up to the 2024 Games is crucial to the success of the event and future of Boston.

The Committee will hear from members of Boston 2024’s leadership team and the City of Boston’s Office of Olympic Planning.  Public testimony will be taken after the presentation and questions from Councilors. Boston’s future, if awarded the bid, will heavily weigh on the success of venue development and financing of operations.

The  Boston City Council’s Committee on the 2024 Olympics will continue its due diligence by working through the bid details and process, in a public forum, to ensure transparency and create an understanding of the value and potential pitfalls of hosting the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Committee will draft and issue a report this summer upon completion of the hearing series.
