Guide to Moving Day in the Neighborhood

September 1st is right around the corner, and you know what that means – it’s Moving Day in the neighborhood! The next few weeks are sure to promise lots of double-parked cars and moving vans, “no parking” moving permits (which residents will ignore), and trash galore!

If you’re gearing up to move — or just love the annual curbside Southie Christmas— here’s how to survive (and maybe even enjoy) the chaos!

Hunt+ Gather

Couches, coffee tables, random equipment, a perfectly good lamp (or is it?) — you’ll see it all jammed onto sidewalks the next few weeks. Follow Stooping Southie on Instagram for the best curbside finds.

Lock Down Your Moving Truck

If you haven’t booked your movers yet, stop reading and do it now.  In addition to large movers, you can book a U-Haul yourself, or try Home Depot, or Enterprise if they are also booked up.  Small Haul is also a fully licensed moving company that can help you move!

Reserve your spot!

You need a moving permit to reserve your spot for a moving truck.  You can apply online here! For a POD or container, head to City Hall in person.  You can learn more here!

Arrange for your old mattress to be picked up!

You can’t just put out your old mattress on the street for trash pick up.  You’ll need to schedule a free pickup with the City.

Set up your Utilities

Moving into a dark, wifi-less apartment is a rookie mistake. Set up electric, gas, and internet early. That means calling Eversource, National Grid, and your internet provider before you move in.

Get Your Resident Parking Permit

New in town with a car? Get it registered with the City of Boston!   Here’s how to do just that!

Recycle Drop Boxes

Clothing, shoes, towels, and bedding don’t go in the trash. Use the City’s textile drop boxes instead. You can get more information about this plus drop box locations here!

Use the 311 App

If you spot illegal dumping, blocked trucks, or just need to report a moving day mess, 311 is your best friend.  Get all the details here!

Deep Breath

Moving isn’t easy.  It takes planning and patience!  The city has a handy dandy guide that you can check out here!  Make sure to follow us on Instagram – we’ll be sharing Move-In Day specials and deals!

Please include a reminder that charcoal and gas grills are not allowed on porches and decks:

That’s a great one Marie! We have a “Welcome to the Neighborhood” post coming in a few weeks – will include that for sure!
