April is indeed a busy month for art shows not to be missed in 02127!
This Saturday, April 21st -the new show at Medicine Wheel Productions opens- Then and Now.
It is a show of three internationally known South African Artists who now reside in the Greater Boston area and runs until June 29th
There is a gallery talk at 5:30pm on Saturday April 21st and it is followed by the reception from 6 to 8pm. Both are free and open to the public.
More about the exhibition:
“Then and Now, is a three person exhibition of work by internationally known South African artists Sophia Ainslie, Ilona Anderson, and Paul Stopforth. The three artists were originally based in Johannesburg, South Africa, but now call the Greater Boston area their home. Although they share a deep connection to each other through their mutual ties to South Africa and the antiapartheid movement, this is the first time they have exhibited together. A practice shared by these three artists is that their works goes beyond a dialog solely concerned with formal art making issues. Their works also speak of global and personal stories as well as the struggles that interconnect us all. For this exhibition, each of the artists is showing art from two different bodies of work: recent work that was completed in the last few years and work created at an earlier date. In a sense this is a show of visual bookends.”
The artists are showing work from two different bodies of work. Here are some highlights of what they are exhibiting: Sophia Ainslie is creating a large scale site specific mural for the show; Ilona Anderson is reconfiguring a recent wall drawing installation for the exhibit; and Paul Stopforth is showing several paintings he made while an artist in residence at Robben Island- the site where Nelson Mandela imprisoned.

Thursday, May 10 at 7 PM: Poetry Reading featuring Dave Connolly and Christopher Millis. In conjunction with Medicine Wheel’s Spoke Gallery exhibit Then and Now, we will be hosting a free poetry reading with life-long South Boston resident Dave Connolly and former South Boston resident Christopher Millis.
Thursday, May 24 at 7 PM: A night of film and conversation with Tug Yougrau. Medicine Wheel Productions is proud to present, in conjunction with our Spoke Gallery exhibit Then and Now, on Thursday, May 24th at 7pm a night with award-winning filmmaker Tug Yourgrau, free and open to the public. He will be presenting excerpts from the films: The New South Africa and The Great Pink Scare.
