After a handful of years in the industry, I’ve been the lucky recipient of some primo style guidance. But if there’s one piece of fashion advice I swear by most, it’s this: the best way to maximize your clothing budget and create a wardrobe you’ll love long-term is to build your closet around timeless staples, and let inexpensive, easy-to-swap pieces speak to the season’s trends. With that in mind, here are four of this summer’s biggest trends, and how to work them in small, low-cost doses.

Summertime Suede
In an unexpected turn of events, suede is sticking around for the warmer months. Dip your toes into the rich material with a pair of fringed heels (I love these from Sam Edelman), or go for a cognac-hued skirt you can recycle come fall with tights and boots.

‘90s Style
As countless blogs have told us, ‘90s-inspired fashion is officially back in the industry’s good graces. And while I’m not on board with all of it (bucket hats, really?), a slinky, spaghetti-strapped slipdress might be the best thing that’s ever happened to me on a 90 + degree day.

Folk Fashion
In yet another fashion flashback, folk-inspired style is making a grand return. Think: rich hues, lightweight fabrics, and detailed embroidery with a homespun-feel. Ease into the trend with a tasseled necklace or a decorative applique you can add to your favorite tee. Grab a straw bag or fringe tote!

The One-Piece
After seeing a rise in popularity last summer, monokinis are set to dominate the beachfront this year. To do right by the trend, look to a simple style with high-cut legs and a scoop neck and back. The best part? Unlike their two-piece counterparts, they double as a top. (Here’s a bunch.)
