Celebrate! Back in 1986, Massport opened Cruisport Boston and welcomed 13 cruise ships and a total of 11,723 passengers in its first season! Now 30 years later, a special unveiling of an art mural created by the children of South Boston including: Laboure Center, South Boston Boys and Girls Club, South Boston Catholic Academy, South Boston Community Health Center and the South Boston Arts Association – to celebrate this anniversary. This celebration will take place on Monday, May 16th at 4pm at Cruiseport Boston, Terminal 1. Massport will also honor Ambassador and Mayor Ray Flynn, who served as Mayor of Boston from 1984 until 1993, for his lasting commitment to the South Boston waterfront. This year, more than 320,000 passengers are expected to come through the port on 114 ships this cruise season.

Calling all kids!  It’s time to register for the South Boston Summer Collaborative Summer Camp at the BCYF Condon Community Center!  Summer camp is for kids ages 5 and 6 and begins Tuesday, July 5th to Friday, August 19th Monday-Friday 9am-3pm.  Cost for the summer is $300 and includes swim lessons, gym and computer time, arts & crafts, games, music storytelling and more!  Registration will take place on Monday, May 16th at 6:30pm at the Condon – 200 D Street!

Southie Traffic Alert: May 22nd – Harpoon 5-Miler!  The 15th Annual Harpoon 5-Miler to benefit The Angel Fund for ALS research is on Sunday May 22nd at 10:00am. The race starts at the Harpoon Brewery in the Seaport district and runs over the Summer Street Bridge to East 1st Street, to Farragut to East Broadway to Day Blvd, to Shore Road and back via East 1st Street.  Please be aware that traffic delays are expected from 10:00am-11:30am in this area of of the neighborhood!  The race is sold out but if you’d like to make a donation, please visit www.harpoon5miler.com.

Buy art!  In support of South Boston Open Studios and Charitable Art Auction, 555 Gallery will be hosting the opening event and a weekend long auction of more than 30 pieces of art by area artists, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the deserving local education enrichment program at The Paraclete Center in South Boston.  This event takes place on Friday, May 20th at 7pm.  Stop by and check out the art,  meet the artists, find out more about The Paraclete, and enjoy some refreshments from local restaurants!
