It’s Veterans Day on Friday, November 11th!   Originally known as Armistice Day to honor the living veterans of World War 1, Veterans Day has transformed into a holiday that celebrates all those who served their country.  Make sure to thank a veteran!

The VFW Post 561 – Thomas J. Fitzgerald Post (715 East Fourth Street) – will celebrate Veteran’s Day on Friday at 9 a.m with a parade march to St. Brigid’s Church, and a memorial Mass followed by a brunch at Cushing Hall (lower church).

Patriots Home – affordable housing for Veterans – South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation and Cartias Communities cordially invite you to join them and Mayor Marty Walsh at the opening and ribbon cutting for Patriot Homes – on Friday, November 11th. Program and tours from 9am-11am. Patriots Homes is located at 273 D Street.

Veterans Day Bake Sale – The kids of the South Boston Neighborhood House have organized an old fashioned bake sale on Friday, November 11th from 11am-2pm at Mt. Washington Bank. Stop by and show your support and pick up a treat or too! All proceeds will go to a special fund to help WWII veteran Ed Hamilton’s trip to Pearl Harbor 75th! A go fund me page has also been set up too!

Mass Fallen Heroes – In honor of Veterans Day, Massachusetts Fallen Heroes will host a ceremony on Friday, November 11th to honor those who have served our country, those who are currently serving and those who made the ultimate sacrifice fighting in the Global War on Terrorism.  The ceremony will be held at the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Memorial in Boston’s Seaport district.

At the ceremony, six wreaths will be laid by their respective branch to represent each branch of the military. An additional wreath will be laid to pay tribute to the fallen. The laying of the wreaths will be joined by bagpipes and the Marine Corps band. The national anthem will be sung by the Boston Fire Department A Capella group and TAPS will be played by a bugler of the United States Military. The DAV 5K Run to Honor Veterans is a run, walk, roll and motorcycle ride that thanks those who served and raises awareness of the issues our ill and injured veterans face every day. The race takes place at Castle Island on Saturday, November 12th at 9am. $30 To register visit here!

• Municipal Offices: Closed (including City Hall, public schools, libraries and community centers)
• Parking Meters: FREE, time limit NOT in effect. All other parking rules remain in effect.
• MBTA: Running on a regular weekday schedule.
• Liquor stores: Open
