Kick ass!  For the month of October, Ultimate Self Defense (12 B Street) is offering free self defense classes every Tuesday in October from 6pm-7pm.  Learn some self defense moves and get a great work out too.  The classes are free and are being offered to raise awareness for breast cancer and domestic violence.  For more information call 617-268-9893. 

Happy Anniversary UMass Boston!  To celebrate the University of Massachusetts 50th Anniversary, Campus on the Common will take place on Tuesday, October 7th from noon to 5:30pm on Boston Common.  This fun and free event will feature a series of “TED Talk-like Tent Talks as well as live entertainment and food at the end of the day.  For more information visit: http://www.umb.edu/news_events_media/events/campus_on_the_common

It’s Club Night at Lincoln (425 West Broadway).  The South Boston Boys and Girls Club Advisory Board member Sach Flechtner wants you to come out and learn more about the great work the SB Boys and Girls Club is doing for our community.  From 5pm-7:30pm on Thursday, October 9th, mix and mingle with your neighbors, hear from club leadership and alumni, and learn about the major renovation happening to the club.  Enjoy pizza, wings, a cash bar, and raffles.  Suggested donation is $20.

A neighborhood meeting in regards to developing a sustainable transportation plan for the South Boston Waterfront will take place on Thursday, October 9th at 6pm at The Condon School (200 D Street).  The South Boston Waterfront Sustainable Transportation Plan is responsible with developing a plan for the future with the following goals: improve access and mobility for all, support economic growth and vitality, reinforce sustainable policies and programs. and contribute environmental and health benefits.  The project is being managed by A Better City on behalf of the sponsoring agencies and is scheduled to be complete with plan recommendations by December 2014.  Project details are available here: http://www.sbwaterfrontmobility.org/

Learn to skate!  South Boston Youth Hockey League is hosting a Learn to Skate, Mite & Squirt House League registration at the Murphy Rink.  October 10:  4:00 PM – 9:00 PM, October 11:  9:30 AM – 5:30 PM, October 12: 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM, October 13:  9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.  Stop by and get some information and register your kids!  The Learn to Skate program begins November 9th.  For more information visit: http://www.sbyhl.com/  South Boston Youth Hockey is also looking for volunteers.  Come get involved and be a part of a great local organization!

Plant a tree!  Southie Trees has launched their fourth Plant-a-tree program.  Since spring of 2013, Southie trees has given away over 23 free trees to South Boston residents. Trees are good for our neighborhood and great for the environment.  If you would like a tree, the deadline for applying is October 10th.  Southie Trees will supply the necessary tools and teach you proper planting techniques at the community tree planting on October 19th (Rain date: Nov. 1st)  To register, visit http://southietrees.techboston.com/ fill out the application and email it back before the 10th.
