Week of November 9th
Go Green. Show your support for veterans by lighting up a green light bulb in your home in a visible spot from the street by Veterans Day. Greenlight a Vet is a project that uses the green light bulb to spark conversation about our veterans and their needs as well as show our support for these brave men and women. So by November 11th – Veterans Day – place a green light bulb on your porch, in your window or in your office. Let’s go green, Southie! True Value Hardware Store at 105 Dorchester Street will be selling green light bulbs with this in mind! Joyce Lebedew Real Estate has generously donated the first 100 light bulbs. So make sure to get yours this weekend!
Vets and flags. The VFW Post 561 – Thomas J. Fitzgerald Post (715 East Fourth Street) – will celebrate Veteran’s Day on Wednesday at 9 a.m with a parade march to St. Brigid’s Chapel, and a memorial Mass. there will also a flag retirement ceremony at 10am at Fort Independence at Castle Island. If you have a worn or damaged flag, you are encouraged to bring it.
Salute our troops. In celebration of Veterans Day, The Paramount Southie (667 East Broadway) is offering a free meal to veterans. Veterans and Active Duty service members can eat free for breakfast or lunch with a valid military ID on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11th. Just a small way to thank our veterans for their service to our country!
Let’s talk turkey! Foodie’s Market – 230 West Broadway is taking orders for your Thanksgiving Turkeys. Stop by and place an order for a Bell & Evans or Shady Book cage-free turkeys raised on vegetarian feed with no antibiotics.
A time for Lovey. Anyone who knew Stephanie “Lovey” Uftring knew how she could light up up a room with her personality. She was outgoing, kind, and loads of fun. Last fall, Stephanie lost her battle with colon cancer and it was a dark day in South Boston to lose such a bright light. A fundraiser will be held in Stephanie’s honor on Friday, November 13th at 7pm at the Teacher’s Union Hall. She loved South Boston and always donated to people in need by showing up at a Southie “time” or purchasing raffle tickets or volunteering to work the events. She would want us to give back to the community on her behalf so this fundraiser is all about giving back and keeping her memory alive. All proceeds for this event will go to scholarships in Stephanie’s name to benefit members of the South Boston community. Tickets can be purchased The Beauty Bar, L Street Tavern and The Seapoint.
