Southie is more than just a neighborhood—it’s a community. And when one of our own is facing the unthinkable, we come together in the most powerful way possible: with love, support, and action.

On April 23rd, 2025, longtime Southie resident Shawn Hilliard went to the ER after weeks of severe nausea. What doctors discovered was devastating—a large tumor on his kidney that had spread to both adrenal glands, lungs, and bones. He was diagnosed with Metastatic Clear-Cell Renal Carcinoma, along with Stage 5 Kidney Failure. While the cancer is not curable, Shawn is undergoing treatment to help slow the spread and to allow him to live more comfortably.

Shawn is a devoted husband to his best friend, Jill, and a loving father to Brooke, Allison, and Robert. As you can imagine, this diagnosis has shaken their world—but through it all, the Hilliards have shown incredible strength, supported by family and friends who are stepping up in every way they can.

Despite having health insurance, the road ahead is financially overwhelming. With extensive treatment, time away from work, and mounting daily expenses, the Hilliard family needs our help now more than ever.
