Welcome to the Neighborhood: USS Thomas Hudner
You may have noticed the warship docked at the Flynn Cruise Terminal in Southie this week! Well, it’s US Navy’s newest destroyer – the USS Thomas Hudner and she’s being commissioned tomorrow at a special ceremony on Saturday December 1st at 10am!
The newly commissioned ship is in memory of the late Thomas Hudner, a Fall River native who earned the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Korean War.
President Harry S. Truman awarded the Medal of Honor to Hudner back in 1951 April 13, 1951 for his “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity” for attempting to save the life of his squadron mate, Ens. Jesse L. Brown, in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. Although Brown died, Hudner survived the war and retired from the Navy after 26 years of service. He passed away November 13, 2017, at the age of 93 and was interred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in April of 2018.
The ship’s motto will be: “Above All Others.”
Free tours of the newly commissioned destroyer will be available Saturday-Thursday!
