Zoning meeting July 31st

Hens and Bees

Image chickens in your yard in Southie!  Well, it could be a reality.  The City of Boston is developing a new section of the zoning code to address the super-popular urban agriculture.  A final meeting about zoning for urban agriculture in Boston will be held July 31st at 6:30pm at the Condon Elementary School (200 D Street).

Topics of discussion will include :

  • Commercial Ground Level and Rooftop Farms
  • Farmers Markets and Farm Stands
  • Aquaculture, Hydroponics & Aquaponics
  • Farm Composting
  • Farm Soil Safety
  • Conditions for Backyard Keeping of Hens and Bees

Similar meetings have been held all around the City and now it’s Southie’s turn.  The City will be presenting a draft  of Article 89, the proposed new citywide zoning article that addresses many urban agricultural activities, such as urban farming (intent to sell).  They want to hear what you think!

The full version (35 pages) of draft Article 89 is available at the project website: www.tinyurl.com/BRARezoneUrbanAgriculture.
