On Tuesday morning, Southie residents woke up to a surprise – a new smoke shop on East Broadway near Emerson.  A sign for King Smoke Shop went up late Monday night at 600 East Broadway and naturally social media went nuts over it.  Residents are upset that there was no public meeting or notice informing the neighborhood of the new business.

There are several King Smoke Shop locations in the Boston area including Roslindale, West Roxbury, Dorchester and JP.  According to their website their newest location is 600 East Broadway and they’ll be selling products ranging from cigarettes, cigars, Juul pods,  vape MODS, rolling papers, and electronic cigarettes.

What do you think?

No one would bat an eyelash if this was on the west side, but since it’s city point and something was changed without a certain few peoples OK, there is concern. SHOCKER!

There are 8 nail salons on Broadway, Eight! I will gladly take some diversity.

We don’t need to meet for EVERY LITTLE CHANGE. We hold up natural economic development and growth that way.

Clearly there are just some crotchety, salty folk that assume ownership of this neighborhood.

I need to ask: Who are these “residents” that are “upset”….and why weren’t they upset with the JP Licks that is about to open at E & W Broadway?

And also, what is the scope of “social media went nuts”….like 5 people in a NIMBY neighborhood group?

progress….. this is a legitimate business….. why the fuss??? Did you hold meetings for every nail salon that went in??

This is seems harmless – agree that no prior notification should be needed for this type of business.

There’s already a liquor store at that intersection, plus American Provisions which sells beer/wine. NIMBY’s gonna NIMBY, I guess!

I agree with everyone who have commented before me. It is a legitimate business just like all the nail salons, bars, restaurants, new condos, the loss of 48 parking spaces on L st, and all the other construction going on in southie. If I hear one more power tool at 7am, I’m going to scream. No one asked my opinion on any of this but life goes on. Until then, I guess I’ll just mind my own business

People should be more concerned for the safety of the residents safety and all the killing in Southie that is not reported because of property value and the almighty dollar!

Killing? Think You have wrong neighborhood? Since the 80s, there have been some murders yes. When was last one? There have only been several and Id say 75% of them were in or just outside projects.

Have no problem with this business opening. Won’t use it but…
More concerned with the store on N & 5th that have “tobacco pipes” on display right behind the slush counter.

In a word – frivolous. Why in the world do we need yet another place to purchase smoking devices of any kind in our area. Nearly every corner store sells just about everything someone will want. Is it just the level of “sophistication” in presentation that’s so appealing? Does a more genteel environment appeal more to this new demographic? I don’t get it, but then I woke up to the health issues of it all 30 years ago and haven’t smoked since.

Hey Abe, there is no store at N & 5th Street. I am wondering what you are smoking!

The sign is an eye sore no one wants to see some larger than life duchey bro vaping. Change the sign to something more in line with the rest of the stores in the area and people will be fine with it.

Everyone knows this is just a setup for a pot store. That is the license that we need to fight.

Everyone? Or just Edward F Lane Jr.? because most people know that if you haven’t been selling medical marijuana for some time, then it’s going to be a very very long time until a new store is selling pot.
