National military nonprofit Hope For The Warriors is joining forces with the Semper Fi Society of Boston and the Massachusetts Military Support Foundation to support Massachusetts-based U.S. Coast Guard families during the government shutdown.

Monetary donations are being collected to purchase gift cards to distribute to furloughed Coast Guard families throughout Boston, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in partnership with the Massachusetts Military Support Foundation. Online donations can be made by visiting here and Massachusetts-based Coast Guard families can apply for assistance at hopeforthewarriors.org.

“Hope For The Warriors has quickly mobilized to support our Massachusetts Coast Guard heroes and their families impacted by the government shutdown,” said Hope For The Warriors President and CEO Robin Kelleher. “We have partnered with the great city of Boston and Executive Director of the Semper Fi Society of Boston Tommy Lyons to consolidate donation efforts and ensure maximum impact to all those affected during this difficult time. We are working closely with the volunteers at Massachusetts Military Support Foundation’s food pantry onboard Joint Base Cape Cod to deliver much needed supplies to our Coast Guard families on the Cape and Islands and throughout Boston. Hope For The Warriors will donate direct financial resources to ensure rent and bills are paid and food can stay on the table,” added Kelleher.

Celebrating over 12 years of service, Hope For The Warriors assists veterans, service members and military families with a variety of programming including clinical health and wellness, sports and recreation and transition services.

“The Semper Fi Society, comprised of thousands of current and former Marines and Navy Corpsmen here in New England, realizes how vital the U.S. Coast Guard is in protecting our nation and recognizes the dangerous missions and operations that these men and women undertake every day,” said Semper Fi Society of Boston Executive Director Tom Lyons. “We encourage all to donate and support these heroes in their time of need.”

Funds raised beyond what is necessary for Coast Guard furlough support will be distributed to Hope For The Warriors, the Massachusetts Military Support Foundation’s food pantry at Joint Base Cape Cod and the Boston USO for ongoing military support programs.

“As someone who served for 25 years in the U.S. Navy, both on active-duty and in the reserves, I know that our Coast Guardsmen are critical to the safety of Boston and the shores of Massachusetts,” said Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn. “It is unconscionable that we, as a nation, are requiring them to fulfill their mission while they and their families have to financially struggle without a paycheck. I strongly encourage my constituents, residents of Boston and military and veteran supporters everywhere to join this effort to alleviate the tremendous burden we are putting on those who protect and defend us,” added Flynn.

Ironic that a site named “Classy.com” collected a $2.10 fee on my $50 donation

I know I’m a dissenter here, but while I, too support the coast guard workers and their families, I think that ending the shut-down of the government would go a long way to supporting them, as well.
