Southie Trick or Treating with a side of Jesus

Things you expect to see in a trick-or-treat bag. Kit Kat, Skittles, a little plastic toy, maybe a toothbrush, but a teeny tiny book about the Bible? Unexpected.
Well, some kids got a little book about the Bible entitled “How to Get to Heaven, including a breakdown of what sin is and God’s law. You know, stuff kids love to read about.
One parent shared CIS with this treat found in her trick-or-treaters’ bags. A little unexpected on Halloween, but maybe it has something to do with the history of Halloween and a way to ward off the “evil spirits.” At least two small pieces of candy were included in the religious book.

Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31, and Halloween 2024 will occur on Thursday, October 31. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats.
