Southie Dolphin swimming in Reserve Channel in the neighborhood

Now, here’s something you don’t see every day.
Southie is so cool that even dolphins want to live here. This little one was spotted in the Reserve Channel on Friday afternoon! Now, is it weird for a dolphin to be in Boston Harbor, in particular a channel? We guess so – but maybe this was not a dolphin – maybe it was something else completely.
In March, what was thought to be a dolphin spotted in Dorchester was actually a harbor porpoise. So maybe this little dolphin is actually a harbor porpoise. If that’s the case, it’s not unusual to see them in Boston Harbor and can be spotted exploring on its own.
Back in 2017, a harbor porpoise was spotted in Fort Point and the Globe reported on it. Harbor porpoises are known to venture close to the shore all along the East Coast around this time of year to forage for food. They will come in close to the shore searching for spawning fish and are usually here from early March to mid-May. So there you have it.
