A Southie day care center –  located at 424 West Broadway – was evacuated this morning due to a rotten smell coming from the basement.   According to the Boston Globe, contractors working on underground pipes out front caused some sort of foul odor to permeate the space in the basement forcing the Head Start chid care center to leave for the day.  South Boston Action Center is also in that building.

Boston firefighters evacuated the center at approximately 8am due to the overwhelming smell.  A hazardous materials team investigated the smell but found no evidence of anything hazardous in the air.

Although no one became sick, the children were sent home for the day. Contractors are working to get rid of the the smell.
