According to the Boston Globe, Jeffrey A Denner – attorney for Edwin Alemany – is planning an insanity defense – in response to charges that Alemany brutally murdered 24 year-old South Boston resident Amy Lord last summer.

On July 23rd of 2013, Alemany went on a violent rampage attacking two women in South Boston and kidnapping and murdering Lord. He also faces charges in a September 2012 attack that was not solved until after he was arrested in Lord’s murder. He is currently undergoing psychiatric evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital.  Alemany has a long record of assaults as both a juvenile and an adult.  Back in December, Alemany pleaded not guilty.

An insanity defense would mean if Alemany was found guilty, the defense would argue he should not be held criminally responsible because he has a long history of mental illness.

The trial is expected to begin in December.

This is very sad news but unfortunately, not surprising. His lawyers had months and months to prepare him for the types of questions he would be askesd by the psychiatrists at Bridgewater Hospital, so no doubt he’ll come out with a diagnosis. And now he’ll live out his days in an institution instead of jail, only to be released in 20 years when he’s “cured”.
