BOSTON – The MBTA today announced service changes in November on the Orange, Red, Green, Franklin, Fitchburg, and Lowell lines. The MBTA will continue working to maintain its infrastructure and improve reliability across the system.

Riders can find more information on service changes through in-station signage, in-station public announcements, and at mbta.com/alerts. Transit Ambassadors and MBTA staff will be available on-site to offer information and assistance during these service changes. Riders are encouraged to subscribe to T-Alerts or to follow the MBTA on X (the site formerly known as Twitter) @MBTA@MBTA_CR, and @MBTA_CR_Alerts for up-to-date service information.

Red Line Service Changes:

Red Line service will be suspended in the following areas during the following dates. Riders can find complete information soon at mbta.com/RedLine. Alternate service options are below:

November 5 – 10:

  • Between Broadway and North Quincy
  • Free and accessible shuttle buses will make all stops between Broadway and North Quincy.
  • Ashmont Branch riders should note that there will be regular service between JFK/UMass and Ashmont except November 9-10.
  • Riders are strongly encouraged to use the Middleborough, Kingston, and Greenbush (Old Colony) Commuter Rail lines for fare-free service between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass, and South Station. Commuter Rail schedules are available on mbta.com.
  • Commuter Rail trains operate about every 20-30 minutes. Travelling between Braintree and South Station on the Commuter Rail is about 24 minutes.
  • Riders should note that regular Commuter Rail fares will be collected for travel beyond Braintree.

November 9-10:

  • Between Broadway and Ashmont
  • Free and accessible shuttle buses will make all stops between Broadway and Ashmont.

November 18 – 24:

  • Between Harvard and Broadway
  • Free and accessible shuttle buses will make all stops between Harvard and Broadway with the exception of Park Street and Downtown Crossing.
  • Riders heading southbound should instead disembark at Otis Street @ Summer Street and use the Winter Street concourse to travel between Downtown Crossing and Park Street.
  • Riders heading northbound should instead disembark at Federal Street @ Franklin Street and use the Winter Street concourse to travel between Downtown Crossing and Park Street.
  • Shuttle buses will also serve State (on the Orange and Blue lines) and Haymarket (on the Orange and Green lines) for easier connections to other subway lines.
  • The Commuter Rail will be fare-free between Porter Square and North Station. Riders should note that regular fares should be purchased beyond Porter Square.
  • The Commuter Rail will also be fare-free between Braintree and South Station

These service changes are in place to perform critical work as part of the Track Improvement Program. The Track Improvement Program will replace tracks and ties to alleviate speed restrictions along the line while crews maximize the outage by performing signal work and station amenity upgrades, including new lighting, painting, tiling, power washing, and more.
