Mayor Makes an “Irish Exit” from the City without letting City Council President Ed Flynn know he’s in charge

What the heck?

The Boston Herald is reporting that Mayor Michelle Wu skipped town for a family vacation this week without informing the city council president, leaving him clueless that he was the acting mayor for several days.

According to the article, the mayor’s spokesperson said the mayor was “squeezing in some family time this last week before school starts.”

The city charter dictates that the council president assumes the role of acting mayor during a mayor’s absence from the city.  Evidently, City Council President Ed Flynn hadn’t been notified until Tuesday afternoon that the mayor was out of town. Basically, it left the city without an acting mayor for several days.

When the Herald asked Flynn if he was notified about the vacation, Flynn stated he was notified he was acting mayor but wouldn’t say when the notification was made.

For those of you unfamiliar with the term “Irish exit,” it means to leave a party or a bar without telling anyone. It’s also called an “Irish goodbye.”

…immature, obstinate and impetuous child. This incidence is only the latest one that speaks to these facts.
She OBVIOUSLY wasn’t happy with the “activity” of Ed Flynn in her previous absence. Her brand of pettiness, jealousy, contempt and resentment is far from “mayoral”. Ugh.
Get over it, Wu. I only hope wherever it is you’ve absconded to this time is to your liking. So much so that you don’t want to leave there.

    “Let us pray”.

The origin of the “Irish Exit” pertained to the heartbreaking Potato Famine. The Irish would leave their native land & their family without saying goodbye because they couldn’t bear the pain. Most knew they would never see their loved ones again. Equating it to someone leaving a bar or a party without proper goodbyes is insulting to Irish people. Ed Flynn deserves more respect for the great job he does for Southie & the city. The Mayor should learn to follow protocol.
