Massport Selects Developer for North Jetty Waterfront Project in South Boston – Creation of 400 Jobs Expected

Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) has tapped Boston Marine Terminal LLC—the Marina-owner team of Chuck and Ann Lagasse—to redevelop a roughly 16-acre parcel at the tip of the waterfront in the Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park, including the aging “North Jetty” structure. The vote happened this week.

According to the Boston Globe, the plan calls for a heavy-duty ship-repair, freight, and industrial operation at the site off Fid Kennedy Ave in South Boston. The Lagasses already operate marine-industry facilities in Boston, including East Boston, and estimate this expansion could create around 400 jobs.

Massport is looking to bring the next wave of ocean-focused tech to the South Boston waterfront. As part of a new initiative called Blue Edge, the agency is working to attract “blue-tech” companies — think businesses that need direct access to the water for things like aquaculture research, marine robotics, and even carbon-capture projects.

According to Massport chief development officer Andrew Hargens, the plan extends beyond the North Jetty. He told the board that Massport also intends to put the former No Name Restaurant space and a neighboring dock on the Fish Pier to work, turning it into a home base for water-dependent tech and innovation.

The agency says the goal is to activate one of the last large industrial waterfront parcels in South Boston and restore the sound structure of the 1,000-foot jetty. The Lagasses have committed to restore the jetty, a project that will likely cost tens of millions of dollars. Massport plans to contribute $20 million of state funds and $1 million in federal funds.

For South Boston, this project isn’t just another waterfront build. It could bring back real working-waterfront jobs after years of condos and offices taking over.
