If you’re riding your bike around Castle Island, please stop.

Just a friendly reminder.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) recently put up a few signs out of Castle Island, reminding visitors that bike riding is prohibited around Fort Independence or the Causeway.  If you do ride your bike out to Sullivan’s or Fort Independence, kindly get off your bike and walk it.

This policy, which has been in place for many years, is designed to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all park-goers. Bikes must be walked throughout Castle Island, and the DCR has provided bike racks at the entry plaza on the Pleasure Bay side, opposite Sullivan’s for convenience.
So there you have it.

Anyone care to wager how many bike riders will ignore this?

Yes, bike riding on sidewalks as well is unacceptable. However, a bigger problem is the rat population throughout South Boston. With all the construction going on, the rats are everywhere. The City should provide a solution as this problem will only get worse.

Although riding on the sidewalk is inconvenient for pedestrians, it is legal. When riding along the water, the bike lane ends at the Curly Center and it actually has an arrow to get onto the sidewalk. As a biker, I always ring my bell and notify walkers. I know not all bikers do. I agree that more bike paths are necessary.

No, riding on sidewalks is not legal. Bikes need to obey the same traffic laws. Every time I go on Castle Island… it is not kids but idiot adults. Rats?! Um okay… that may be a you issue… and everyone manage their trash.

If they want to drive on the sidewalks maybe the bike lanes can get moved there permanently.

That’s ridiculous. People have been riding bicycles around Castle Island for over century. All of a sudden it’s a huge problem?
Give us a break! We should be getting rid of the bike lanes throughout the city, they cause nothing but headaches! There’s never a single bike in the bike lanes. When I was a kid growing up everyone was driving bikes and we never had bike lanes and everything was copacetic. People are sick and tired of these crazy liberals pushing their crazy, useless ideas on everyone. Global Warming is a hoax it was just recently exposed by hundreds of scientists. They said they had to say they their was man made Global Warming or they would lose all their money 💰(funding)

To G.W.I.A.H. I know people have been riding their bicycles for a long time out at Castle Island, but this is not a new rule. I was born and raised in South Boston and rode my bike out Castle Island when I was younger and into my teen years. I have a son who is now 35 and that rule came into play when he was young. I always figured I would teach him to ride a bike, with training wheels, at Castle Island, but that rule was in place way back then, le’ts say at least 32 years ago.
