Fare hike proposed.

Does it look it’s going to cost more to take the T in the near future?  Most likely!  Thanks to the ever-expanding budget of the Green Line extension and an unbalanced budget, the MBTA has placed two fare hike proposals on the table.  The MBTA proposed four different options on Monday at the T’s Fiscal Management and Control Board meeting.

According to the Boston Globe, single-ride fares on the train could go up a dime, and monthly T-passes could increase by $9.50 by this summer.  The alternative would also raise single-ride train fares by about a dime but increase the prices of monthly passes by $7.50.

The MBTA will hold 10 public meetings on the fare hikes and allow riders to e-mail or send in written comments.  We expect those meetings will be action packed and are dissapointed there won’t be one in Southie!  See Schedule Below

The MBTA control board are expected to vote in March on the proposed fare hikes.  The increase would go into effect in July.

Does that mean if the fare increases T riders will see better service?  Not likely in the near future.  This winter expect unshoveled bus stops, huddled masses of commuters waiting for the #7, slow service and buses that just don’t show up.  Advice?  Invest in snow shoes or skis.

Happy travels.
