What the hell is this?  And should we be in panic mode?  If you have a smart phone, you probably received an Emergency Alert:

Per MEMA.  Sporadic 911 outages.  In emergency, use 10 digit number for local police and fire.

So here’s the number for police and fire: 617 343-4911 – just in case you have an emergency.

Earlier on Friday, both Boston Police and Fire believed the issues with 911 were resolved but it appears there is intermittent outages.  So be aware.

Calling the regular police phone number in the location they happen to be in on a cell phone is one thing. 911, which is the real emergency call, is more reliable when it’s done on a landline, first because the origin of the 911 call can be traced directly through a map, secondly, the address of where the 911 originates also comes up, plus calling 911 from a landline reduces the chances of being rooted to the wrong place, or cut off in the middle of a 911 call, both of which can waste valuable time in the event of an emergency.
