City Councilor Matt O’Malley ordered a hearing this past Wednesday to discuss the creation of an election day holiday in the City of Boston. The goal of the holiday is to help increase voter turnout. According to O’Malley, only 25% of Boston residents vote in municipal elections. Come on! We can do better!
O’Malley would like the City to create a paid holiday for its workers or maybe even swap out an existing holiday like Columbus Day to make room for the new Election Day holiday.
The matter was assigned to the Committee on Arts, Culture and Special Events for a hearing.
