Caught in Southie: Spotted Lanternfly

Eeekkk.
Well, look who showed up in Southie. A spotted lanternfly was seen in the neighborhood on Thursday on East Second between I and K.
The spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect that can damage trees, grapevines, and other plants by feeding on their sap. They don’t bite or sting people or pets, but Massachusetts officials are asking residents to help slow their spread.
If you see one, snap a photo, check the state’s infestation map, and report it if it’s in an area where the insect hasn’t already been documented.
Learn more about the spotted lanternfly and what to do if you see one through the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources.
