Boston City Council Honors Ms. Mary Shanley on Her 100th Birthday

The neighborhood came together this week to celebrate a true milestone — the 100th birthday of Ms. Mary Shanley, a beloved community member and a shining example of resilience, kindness, and Irish spirit.
City Councilor at-large Erin Murphy, Councilor Ed Flynn, alongside friends, family, and neighbors at 376 West Fourth Street, gathered to honor Ms. Shanley with an official Resolution recognizing her century of life, love, and community. Born in a small village in Galway, Ireland, Mary came to America at just 19 years old, the oldest of nine children, bringing with her a deep sense of courage and faith that would define her life.
Mary’s story is one of heart and heritage. She met her husband, Michael, at Hibernia Hall, a lively spot filled with Irish music and dance. Then, they married at St. Cecilia’s Church in the South End. The couple built their home and family in Dorchester, raising four daughters surrounded by laughter, homemade Irish dance costumes, and the sweet scent of Mary’s famous chocolate chip cookies.
Today, she’s the proud grandmother of three granddaughters—Mary, Cassidy, and Genevieve—and recently celebrated Cassidy’s wedding with great joy. Surrounded by her loving family, friends, and Father Joe White, who offered a special blessing, Mary’s 100th birthday was marked with warmth and gratitude.
The Boston City Council’s tribute serves as a beautiful reminder of Mary’s enduring legacy — one built on family, faith, and community. Here’s to many more years of health, happiness, and love for Ms. Mary Shanley!
