A Big Thank You from Southie Swims for Scleroderma
We would like to thank all those who have been a part of the “Southie Swims for Scleroderma” fundraiser this year. Scleroderma is a chronic, progressive autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues.
The disease, which literally means “hard skin,” can cause thickening and tightening of skin, as well as serious damage to internal organs. Presently, the cause of Scleroderma is not known, and there is no cure. A cluster of Southie women were diagnosed with this rare disease, which left the community confused and wanting answers. Elizabeth Lombard, our mother, has bravely fought this disease for over 25 years. For many years, our uncle, Kevin Conroy, led the fundraiser and took the plunge every year to raise awareness. My siblings and I have taken over the fundraiser for the past few years and continue to be amazed and grateful for the show of support from the South Boston community.
Due to the generosity of so many we have raised over $6,000 that will be going straight to the National Scleroderma Foundation. Thank you to every single person who donated, bought a raffle ticket, and swam on New Year’s Day. Thank you!
Thank you to the businesses that donated gift cards to our cause.
