Zoning Board Approves Plans for New South Boston Courthouse on West Broadway in the old Southie Savings Bank

Plans to transform the former South Boston Savings Bank at 460 West Broadway into a new home for the South Boston district courthouse are moving forward.

The Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved plans from local developers David Matteo and David Winick of Cedarwood Development to renovate the 1948 bank building and add two floors in the rear. Plans also include five parking spaces, indoor storage for 13 bicycles, and outdoor racks for six more.

The original proposal called for a three-story addition with 20 apartments and 21 parking spaces, but neighbors’ opposition led to the removal of the residential portion. The Boston Planning Department approved the revised, smaller project in April.

The project required several zoning variances, including for height and density, as well as a change from the property’s current bank use.

How many units are in the two rear stories ?
Are the parking spots for court house employees or for residents ? Obviously there is not enough parking!

So, Cedarwood then buys the old courthouse spot once the District Court moves to 400 W Broadway, and they develop that location on East Broadway into housing? That is the ultimate play here?

Cedarwood are long time tested and trusted developers in Southie. The two Dave’s began developing Southie Real Estate over 2 decades ago. They own Publico a very popular Southie restaurant. They will responsibly & sustainably convert the Old SB Bank into the courthouse. Maybe Conan HARRIS will develop the old courthouse like he’s doing in Springfield. Think Cedarwood is doing the job for less than the 2B Conan is charging Springfield ?

Why cant the new part blend better with the front bank side? are they going to keep the artwork inside the bank? Always thought that it was pretty cool…Where are the prison vehicles going to park?And where are the cells going to be?
