Not since the days of Laverne & Shirley have we longed for a Murphy bed in our home. Well, one teeny-tiny studio unit so small that a Murphy bed* will have to be installed is included in a new development at 142-144 Old Colony Ave. just approved by the City of Boston Zoning Board.

Don’t know what a Murphy bed is? Well, it’s also called a wall bed, pull down bed, or fold-down bed, is a bed that is hinged at one end to store vertically against the wall, or inside a closet or cabinet.

According to Universal Hub, some of the one-bedroom units are smaller than normally allowed by the City of Boston (some as small as 431 square feet) but evidently the BPDA allowed the smaller units if the developer provided a common space for residents. In addition to the 19 units, there will be 14 stacked parking spaces.

Hmmm…wonder what’s next? Just beds inside a Farbman cabinet?
