Top chefs from area restaurants, bakeries and culinary schools will put their dessert skills to the test as they compete in the 19th Annual Gingerbread House Competition to benefit Housing Families, Inc. – a non-profit organization dedicated to ending family homelessness in Massachusetts This battle of gingerbread and icing will go down on Friday, November 2nd from 10am to 12noon.  The sweet and tasty homes will be judged by a celebrity panel including Caught in Southie’s own Maureen Dahill and her two sons Peter Gailunas (9 years old) and Henry Gailunas (8 years old).??This event is part of the 26th Annual Boston Christmas Festival at the Seaport World Trade Center (200 Seaport Boulevard) all weekend long.  Featuring handcrafted gifts, holiday decorations, jewelry, clothing, pottery, folk art, and gourmet specialty food.   Tickets are $10.  For more information visit www.bostonChristmasFestival.com

Finally day light savings is over.  We’re tired of it being pitch black at 6am! This Sunday, November 6th turn your clocks back an hour and gain one hour of much needed sleep.

Eat:
Whether you use American, cheddar, or Swiss, we all think we make a pretty good grilled cheese.  But do you think you have the chops to go up against the best local chefs, home cooks and closet cheese-masters in Boston?  Come show off your skills or just enjoy the tasty treats on Sunday, November, 4th to help raise money for a great local charity –  Lovin Spoonfuls Food Rescue (http://www.lovinspoonfulsinc.org/).Watch the grilled cheese experts compete in the grilled cheese cook-off and sample their wild creations. There will be beer and wine from 90+ Cellars served, entertainment, great raffle prizes, and lots of America’s favorite comfort food – grilled cheese (duh). This event takes place from 12pm-5pm at the Seapoint Restaurant (367 East Eighth Street).  $20 donation.

Drink:
As the presidential election draws near, the Capiz Lounge at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel is serving up some special cocktails to help get guests in the political spirit. Belly up to the bar on order up The Scallywag, a perfect combination of spicy and sweet, with highlights of maple, pomegranate and citrus to offset the strong flavor of the bourbon or The Capitol Hill, a combination of bourbon, rum, sweet vermouth, and bitters.
The political potions can be enjoyed through November 6th.  Don’t forget to vote on Election Day – November 6th.??

Happy Hour:
Barlow’s celebrates Happy Hour not once but twice – seven days a week.  Between 3pm-6pm and again 10pm-close enjoy half-priced appetizers and $1 oysters.  Not bad!

Inspire:
South Boston Open Studios! Saturday November 3 and Sunday November 4th from Noon to 6pm!  Free and open to the public!??It is that time again!  Time to visit the studios of the artists and crafts people who live and/or work in South Boston.  This event is free and open to the public and takes place on Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th from noon to 6pm.   Here are the three venues on the studio tour:

  • The Distillery Building at 516 East Second Street (includes artists studios and two galleries- The Distillery Gallery and Proof Gallery)
  • King Terminal- 110 K Street & 574 E 1st St. (which includes artists studios and Medicine Wheel & its Spoke Gallery – also MWP will have free family lantern making workshops)
  • One group exhibition at Thomas Young Studios on 469 West Broadway

Run/Walk/Jog:
Get ready to walk, run or jog at a family friendly road race this weekend!  On Saturday, November 3, the 5K2Play walk, run, or jog road race will take place. The race will start at 9:00 AM and registration will be open at 7:30. The race will start and finish at DCR’s Mother’s Rest at Carson Beach in South Boston. Registration for the race is $35. Amrheins is proud to be hosting a fundraiser to support the American Cancer Society on Saturday, November 3rd from 2 to 5 pm. Jennifer Nania and Michelle Competiello, along with the American Cancer Society DetermiNation Team, will be running in the ING Miami Half Marathon on January 27, 2013. They will be dedicating the race to Jen’s father, who lost his battle to lung cancer 2 years ago this November.
