Veterans Day in the Neighborhood

Thank you, Veterans!
Originally known as Armistice Day to honor the living veterans of World War I, Veterans Day has transformed into a holiday celebrating all who have served and are serving their country. Here are some things happening in the neighborhood to celebrate. Check back as this list may be updated!
Veterans Day Cruise
Enjoy a cruise to Peddocks Island, followed by guided tours of historic Fort Andrews, reflections on service, and fun self-guided activities for all ages. Light snacks and warm beverages will also be provided, but we encourage visitors to plan accordingly by either bringing lunch from home or purchasing food aboard the ferry. This ferry takes place on Saturday, November 15th from 11am-3 pm and is free for veterans. Learn more here.
DAV 5K
Lace up those sneakers and run or walk the DAV 5K at Castle Island on Saturday, November 8th. Cheer on the runners around Castle Island! Volunteers also wanted! You can learn more here!
The Zoo is Free for Veterans
In honor of Veterans Day, admission to Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo will be free on November 11th 2025 from 9am-4pm. Spend the day with family, learn about fascinating wildlife, and explore all the Zoos have to offer! Free entrance will be available with proper military identification for veterans and their immediate family members.
Veterans Day Memorial Service
Join the Fitzgerald Post for the 74th annual Veterans Day Memorial Service on Tuesday, November 11.
9am – assemble at the post
9:30 – parade to St. Brigid
10am – memorial mass
Special Deals for Vets
- Legal Sea Foods: Free bowl of chowder for veterans and active military on Tuesday, November 11 – dine in only. All locations except airports.
- Tuscan Brands is proud to welcome all veterans for complimentary dining at all of its locations on November 11th!
- Free Admission to JFK Library
What’s Opened and Closed
Retail stores: Open at owners’ discretion after 1 p.m., unless retailer obtains permit to open earlier.
Liquor stores: Most are open, but some may have limited hours and not open until 1 p.m..
Supermarkets: Open at owner’s discretion.
Convenience stores: Open at owners’ discretion.
Taverns, bars: Open at owners’ discretion.
Banks: Closed.
Municipal buildings: Closed.
Libraries: Closed.
Schools: Closed.
Mail: Post offices closed. UPS and FedEx will operate as usual.
MBTA: All modes of public transit will operate on a regular schedule.
Boston traffic rules: Parking meters are free with no time limit. All other parking rules apply.
Trash/recycling collection: Collections will be delayed in some neighborhoods.
