Cold plunging is having a moment. Many people are getting on this new health trend by cold plunging at spas, pop-ups, or even purchasing their own personal cold water tub.  Cold plunging is said to help with anxiety, boost your immune system, decrease inflammation, and improve your overall health.

But why not save some money and cold plunge right in Boston Harbor? Recently, a Southie cold plunge community popped up on Instagram, organizing revitalizing dips each weekend!

Cold plunging is not new to Southie. The L Street Brownies have been cold plunging for over 100 years. Their most popular event is the New Year’s Day Polar Plunge. The L Street Brownies were known to swim every day through rain, shine, sleet, or snow! A Globe article from 1913 even wrote about them cutting through the ice to swim…naked. Hopefully, the new cold plunging community will wear bathing suits.

The Southie Cold Plunge weekend plunge will be held on Saturday at 11 am at Carson Beach at K Street.  We recently reached out to Southie resident and organizer Michael Hall to ask him a few questions!

What made you decide to organize this?

This is something that I have grown super passionate about, and I feel there has been a growing popularity of people doing cold plunges, especially in the Southie area. Having a group of people plunge together can create a community event where people can feed off of each other’s energy and help them, whether it’s their first time plunging or it’s their 100th time plunging. Creating this contagious environment where people come together to show self-discipline and perform a difficult act is what this is all about. This is also something I wish I had when I first started off because I struggled at first, but after slow progression, I became more confident, and I want people to know others support them from the start!

How long have you been cold plunging?

I’ve been doing it for three months now and have grown super passionate about it.

Do people who want to plunge just show up?

Yes, it’s a completely free community event.  Just show up  – try and arrive 15 minutes earlier than the plunge time, which will allow you to connect and meet friends and neighbors. This will help create a contagious environment where people can share their interests/goals in all areas of life.

Any post-plunge get-togethers planned?

As popularity grows, the plan is to create pre and post-activities, whether it’s sipping on hot chocolate and eating bananas afterward or going on a run beforehand – to be determined as we get closer to the first plunge date.

Make sure to follow Southie Cold Plunge on Instagram for the latest!

My father, Tom Grace is the man on the ground that snow is being thrown on him. He did this for 40 years straight with 10 buddies
