Southie revisited
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are joining forces once again to make a movie about – guess who? – Whitey Bulger. Matt Damon told GQ that he and Ben Affleck have picked their next collaboration – a film about the former head of the Irish Mob, one of the most notorious figures in the history of organized crime. Damon will star as Bulger and Affleck will direct. Terrence Winter of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos will write the script. Warner Bros., who produced Gone Baby Gone and nine movies with Matt Damon in the last decade, will be producing the film.
Damon and Affleck are not alone in their desire to tell the tale of Whitey. Previously announced Bulger projects include :
John Martorano will be the subject of producer Graham King, who won the Best Picture Oscar for Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. King has reportedly acquired the rights of that book.
Black Mass the book by Boston Globe Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill, is reportedly in the works from producer Brian Oliver.
And even Eddie MacKenzie’s story Street Soldier: My Life as an Enforcer for Whitey Bulger is being produced by actor Peter Facinelli (Twilight).
As for what part of Whitey Bulger’s life will be the focus of the movie is unclear. It’s may take the shape of a biopic covering Bulger’s entire life so far or it center around one time period. We’re hoping it’s the Whitey heydays in the 1970’s an 80’s a la Triple O’s.
