Festooned with green, the city of Lynn was transformed into St. Patrick’s Day in Southie circa 1978.  The filming of Black Mass – the movie about notorious Southie mobster Whitey Bulger starring Johnny Depp – continued in Lynn on Monday complete with floats, marching bands, irish flag bunting and parade goers decked out in the wearing o’ the green.  Sparing no detail, the central square commuter stop in Lynn was even transformed into Broadway Station.

Also on hand leading the parade was actor Benedict Cumberbatch rocking a navy blue suit, a green tie, a green carnation and a “Resist” pin –  no doubt a reference to the anti-busing movement in Boston.  Cumberbatch is playing Billy Bulger brother of Whitey and former Massachusetts Senate president.  One of our beefs with this picture is that “Billy Bulger” is holding a large parade baton.  He always carried a shillelagh.

So why were they filming in Lynn instead of Southie?  Because the landscape of South Boston has changed so much it would be difficult to transform it back to the Southie of the late 70’s.  No kidding?

Black Mass will be filming back in South Boston on Monday, June 30th

Funny that a Hollywood movie is turning Lynn into the new Southie. I know its only make believe, but what isnt so make believe is with the gang shooting in the projects and the politicians inability or lack of will to throw drug offenders and illegal aliens out of the projects, it looks like Southie is fast becoming the new Lynn.
