to play Whitey Bulger

It’s a done deal. Actor Johnny Depp has made a deal to star in Black Mass the film about notorious South Boston gangster James Whitey Bulger. Black Mass will be directed by Scott Cooper for Cross Creek Pictures. Production will begin in May.

Depp was originally supposed to play Bulger when the film was to be directed by Barry Levinson but the deal fell through over money.

Ben Affleck will also be directing his own Whitey Bulger project too and will be scripted by Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter. Matt Damon is expected to play Whitey. As to which film will hit the theaters first, it seems like Black Mass will. Affleck’s next project will be directing Dorchester guy Dennis Lehane’s Live By Night which begins filming in September.
