Because you asked!

Hey Southie!  Thank you to all of those who follow Caught in Southie’s reviews as well as check-in when I make book drops around the neighborhood.  I thought I’d give you a little info about these Free Little Libraries.

Free Little Library is part of a non-profit organization that believes in building community and there is a book for every reader.  This fits perfectly for South Boston and the people that live here.  They hope that the book boxes bring joy to all and encourage access for everyone.

For everyone asking, I often post the ones closest to where I live – which are located at

  • G Street and East 8th

  • Julie’s Family Learning Center Parking Lot (West 4th Street)

Additional Southie libraries include:

  • In the Laboure Parking Lot (D Street)

  • By the Tynan Elementary School (East 4th Street)

  • Colin’s Courtyard (in honor of Colin McGrath – L Street)

Note:  These are the libraries that I know of.  Additional libraries are often added and the most updated map is via their website or their app!  Feel free to take a pic and tag @caughtinsouthie @glossinbossin to show us your finds!

There are a few quick tips for libraries and I think that most follow, but I thought I’d share.

  • Bring one, take one – all ages!  All genres!

  • The little libraries are LITTLE, so please don’t just dump the books that have sat in your attic since 1995.  Nobody wants to read those.

  • Choose a book that you loved and you want to pass on :)

  • Good condition and better is best.

  • While you’re there, tidy it up.  The libraries are cared for by a person or an organization and it’s neighborly to tidy up the books.  It’s appreciated.

If you’re interested in starting your own Free Little Library or just to read more up on the program, check out their website here: https://littlefreelibrary.org/ – It gives support on building or buying one and has lots of FAQs!  The website also provides a map of local FLLs and pictures of what they look like.

    Hello Josie,
Just to let you know, we put an offer in for the closed bank on West Broadway, we hope to make it into a cultural center for the community. It would be a great place for a book house.
    Thanks,
